The TNFD is a global, market-led initiative with the mission to develop and deliver a risk management and disclosure framework for organisations to report and act on evolving nature-related risks, with the ultimate aim of supporting a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive outcomes.

The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures was announced in July 2020 and launched in July 2021 after a preparatory phase, culminating in the publication of a development roadmap for the Taskforce called Nature in Scope. That roadmap was developed by an Informal Working Group comprising 75 members, including 49 financial institutions and corporates, 8 governments and 18 market consortiums. The Informal Working Group was supported by an Informal Technical Expert Group, and a Founding Partner Group consisting of Global Canopy, UNDP, UNEP FI, and WWF.

At the centre of the TNFD initiative sits the Taskforce of 34 senior executives drawn from companies, financial institutions and market intermediaries around the world and led by the TNFD Co-Chairs, Elizabeth Mrema and David Craig. Collectively, the Taskforce Members represent institutions with a combined market capitalisation of over US$3.1 trillion, manage over US$18.3 trillion in assets and have a footprint in over 180 countries.

The Taskforce is supported by the TNFD Forum, a consultative grouping of over 300 institutional supporters of the TNFD mission, who have expressed a willingness to make their expertise and capabilities available to support the work of the Taskforce. The Taskforce and Forum are managed and coordinated by the TNFD Secretariat, which also convenes and directs the TNFD Knowledge Hub of leading international science and industry bodies and additional channels for market, public sector and community consultation. Finally, a Stewardship Council represents the public sector and philanthropic founders and funders of the TNFD initiative.
